About the Hazmat exam
What do I need for the hazmat (H) endorsement?
You need a commercial driver's license (or to be getting one), to pass your state's Hazardous Materials knowledge test and to pass a TSA security threat assessment, which includes fingerprints and a fee. If you are getting the H endorsement for the first time, federal rules also require entry-level driver training (ELDT) hazmat theory from a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before you take the test. Your state may have extra steps, so check with your DMV.
How many questions are on the hazmat test?
In most states the Hazardous Materials knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions and you need 80% (24 correct) to pass. A few states use a slightly different count. The questions come from the Hazardous Materials section of your state's CDL manual.
What is on the test?
The test covers the Hazardous Materials section of the CDL manual: the hazard classes, shipping papers, labels and markings, placards (including Table 1 and Table 2 and the 1,001-pound rule), loading and unloading and segregation, cargo tanks, driving and parking rules such as attending the vehicle and stopping at railroad crossings, and what to do in a leak, fire or crash.
Is this the same as the tanker or HAZWOPER training?
No. This site is for the CDL Hazardous Materials knowledge test for the H endorsement. The tanker (N) endorsement is a separate test, and drivers who need both get an X endorsement. HAZWOPER and DOT hazmat employee training are separate training requirements, not the CDL knowledge test.
Is this the official test?
No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The hazmat knowledge test is given by your state's driver licensing agency. This site is not affiliated with any state DMV, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, PHMSA or the TSA, and our questions are not taken from the real test.
